Kitchen Nightmares

2022 - Student Project

In the fridges, in the pantry, on all the tables sits your once appetising ingredients, now rotting from the inside as a virus has spread across the city infecting food and making them sentient. Grab your sharpest if you want any chance at survival. 

Kitchen Nightmares is a 2D bullet hell inspired by Vampire Survivors, set in a large industrial kitchen and surrounding gardens and houses. Stab, slash and crush an infinite wave of ingredients hell bent on chasing the chef until he meets the same demise they were about to receive. Be decisive and move quickly, as your movement is you best utensil for survival (alongside the cutlery you grabbed from the kitchen!)

I created Kitchen Nightmares in 2022 as my first ever game built in a game engine. Most of the module was spent learning the ropes of unity and creating a 2D platformer as a practice before moving onto my bullet hell. I spent the first half of the module designing the bullet hell, creating multiple levels, bosses, mini bosses, powerups, weapons, and enemies. I then spent the next few weeks working on the 2D platformer to learn unity and gain transferable skills for developing the bullet hell. My goal with this module was to create a chaotic bullet hell inspired by Vampire Survivors and Geometry wars with the player feeling overwhelmed while waves are attacking only getting a few seconds of breathing time between waves.
